History of the firm

Scomparin & Bernardi is a boutique general practice firm, based in Clifton Hill. We provide quality legal services to private individuals and businesses, small and large, in Melbourne, interstate and internationally, and have done so for over 50 years.

The firm was established by Giovanni Scomparin and Carlo Bernardi, two Italian immigrants from the Veneto region, in 1970. Over the 50 years of operating, SB Law Partners have forged many enduring relationships within the Italian and Clifton Hill Communities, with business owners and generations of families, who have engaged us to act over decades, in a variety of matters.

Giovanni Scomparin sadly passed in 2019.  Until his passing, he provided advice and support to the Italian community both in person and on Rai Italia. In 2018 the Law Institute of Victoria awarded Giovanni a Certificate of Service to Law and the Italian Community during his 50 years of practice.

Carlo continues to build and grow this legacy and we now have lawyers who are fluent in Italian, Filipino, Hindi, Punjabi, and Urdu.

Throughout the years, both Carlo and Giovanni have remained closely connected to their Italian roots and given back to the community. Giovanni was on the first committee which founded the Veneto Club (which provides a home away from home and preserving Veneto traditions for generations, the club is a prosperous Italian club with the goal of connecting families) and was a board member at Co.As.It (whose mission is to promote Italian language, culture and heritage while providing culturally appropriate services to the Italian-Australian Community) until his death. Giovanni was also president of INCA-CGIL.

Carlo has been an active member of the Veneto Club, previously serving as its solicitor for 20 years and also as a committee member. He now sits on the board of the Italian Australian Foundation providing educational, cultural and heritage resources, as well as grants and bursaries for those of Italian heritage in Australia. He was also on the board of San Carlo Homes For the Aged and Co.As.It.
